Nacklacs of diamonds
From classic diamond solitaries to stunning medleys of color and dramatic gold neck rings, necklaces are always in fashion. You can choose different designs to compliment any outfit, but remember to select styles that work for you. Long necks look lovely in new lariat styles and chokers, while fuller, thicker necks can enjoy elegant 18″ pendants or solitaires. Not only will this choice make a dramatic statement with any outfit, but it will also project an image of a longer neck.
Clasp:
Take a minute to familiarize yourself with clasps and chains, as they are the foundation of quality that cannot be hidden, no matter how many diamonds you put on them. Always look for smooth soldering and clasp size proportionate to necklace size. These are a few of the most widely used types.
- Hidden clasp with safety: Offers double security and beauty. Unsnap the stylish outer lock to reveal the inner safety latch.
- Lobster claw clasp: A spring action lock keeps the arm closed. This is a very popular design because of its ease of use and proven security.
- Safety clasp: Squeezing the side arms of the hook together, slide the hook from its lock to release.
- Spring ring: Opens when a little arm pulls back on the hidden spring. The least secure of all clasps, usually used for lighter, less expensive jewelry.
Chains:
There are many types and styles of chains for necklaces. The main thing you need to think about is what type of metal you desire.
Gold has been the first choice for centuries. White and yellow gold have each enjoyed periods of heightened popularity, but you should concern yourself more with which type and color works best for a particular design or gemstone.
Gold is a very porous, and relatively soft metal, so it must be examined for thin spots, pits and divots. Very gently, squeeze your gold. If it gives easily, consider another piece. Of course you should never squeeze gold at a jewelry store without first asking permission.
Platinum has become increasingly popular in recent years. The stunning appearance of this incredibly tough metal compliments colorless diamonds and sapphires beautifully. Of course, diamonds below I color may appear a little yellow when showcased in the white of platinum.
Unlike gold, platinum is virtually impervious to scratches. Even if it does scratch, you can have it re-polished without losing any of the metal. Platinum is also an excellent option for people who suffer from allergies to gold and other metals
Silver is a beautiful choice as well. More affordable than gold and platinum, silver has been extremely popular lately with the recent trend toward white metals. Silver is not typically used for necklaces which contain expensive gemstones.
Buying tips:
- Inspect chains for quality. You should not only be able to feel the quality, you should hear it as well. Roll the chain from one hand to the other, does it feel light and hollow? Then it probably is. That’s okay, as long as you aren’t expecting it to safely hold diamonds and rubies for generations.
- What type of clasp does the piece have? Higher end necklaces and bracelets should not have a simple ring clasp.
- Look at the soldering. Make sure it’s clean and smooth.
