Diamond Shapes “Fancy Shaped Diamonds”
The diamond shapes that are most popular include round, square, rectangular, oval and heart shaped diamonds. Just about any shape can be created by a bench jeweler but it all depends on how much wasted stone is viable in making a unique shape.
The more of the diamond that is cut off the less valuable the stone becomes and the higher the premium is charged for the shape. The most efficient cut diamond is the round shape and the round shape also gives the best sparkle and brilliance (reflected light) and that’s why it’s also the most popular shape to buy.

In fact any diamond that’s not “round brilliant” is called a fancy shaped diamond. If you’ve been following the loose diamonds tutorials you’ll already know that the round brilliant diamond is the only diamond that can be graded as having an ideal cut.
Any other diamond shapes can get fairly close but will never have the efficient optical properties of the round brilliant.
There are two ways to fashion diamond shapes:
1: Step Cut: The diamond is cut pyramid fashion as seen in the very rough representation opposite. The flat parallel planes that are created don’t always have 90В° angles, they’re often angled or faceted to follow the natural angle of the stone.
2: Brilliant cut: The diamond is cut and faceted from the middle point of the top and bottom of the diamond outwards – towards the center (girdle) of the diamond. Brilliant cuts can be any shape from square to oval.
Some diamond shapes are cut using both styles i.e. step cut on the top and brilliant cut on the bottom.
A full step cut has less brilliance and the stone is usually transparent enough to see right inside without magnification so it’s always better to opt for better than SI clarity and then any inclusions won’t be visible to the naked eye.
The most famous of the step cuts is the emerald cut which is a rectangle shape with angled corners (see below).
Diamonds may be one of the hardest substances on earth but they’re fairly brittle and have planes of weakness (grain) along which they can split. So rounding off a diamond’s corners and points helps protect them from damage and makes them easier to mount.
The most famous and popular of the diamond shapes is the round brilliant which offers the best optical properties for any diamond. See below for the cuts most widely available today.
These are not all of the possible diamond shapes and cuts available but are the most popular un-patented designs.
Sometimes diamond accents/baguettes are tapered at one or both ends to be able to be set along the band of a ring setting. Sometimes triangular diamonds (trilliant cut) adorn the center stone or in some cases can be set solitaire style, it’s all a matter of personal taste.
Choosing good cut grades in fancy diamond shapes is very difficult to doВ – unlike round brilliants which can be calculated mathematically.
Even so, there are a few rules of thumb you can follow to make sure you get a quality stone. These are all things you can find on theВ diamond grading report that accompanies any reputable certified diamonds.
1.Check that the polish is very good to excellent.
2.Choose clarity grades that are no worse than VS2.
3.Make sure that the symmetry is very good to excellent.
4.Go for stones graded with low or no fluorescence.
5.Check that the girdle isn’t too thin or very thick.
6.Check the length to width ratio: Long short-width stones fair worse than stones close to round or square. If looking at a rectangle, oval or marquise make sure that the width is adequate in relation to the length. Plump is o.k. – long and skinny generally isn’t so good.
There is a fair amount of controversy surrounding cut grades in fancy diamond shapes so at the end of the day it’s “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” time.
Even the experts can’t agree on quality issues surrounding cut grades in fancy diamond shapes, so if you’re in any doubt stick to the trusted round brilliant or appraise your chosen fancy diamond shape on how much it pleases you.
If you’re looking for pointers as to which diamond shapes other than round brilliant are the most popular for solitaires then princess cut diamonds and emerald cut diamonds must be the right answer, closely followed by the oval and heart shaped diamonds.
