Loose Diamonds – The Four C’s
A loose diamond of any significant size and value today automatically comes with an independent diamond grading report that has no connection whatsoever with the diamond retailer. That means that a diamond is graded before it’s even delivered to the wholesaler or retailer.

A diamond grading report is used to describe and identify an individual diamond and is based on the four c’s: cut, clarity, carat and color. This is carried out in a gem trade laboratory under strict appraisal conditions by a fully qualified GTL grader. This serves to protect the jewelry trade and ultimately the end consumer from fraud.

Loose Diamonds – Beyond The Four C’s
The four c’s will only give a partial evaluation of the quality and price of diamonds because there are further factors to be aware of in this process. A diamond grading report also goes beyond the four c’s but is not an official guide to the price of a loose diamond.

It is the individual wholesaler/retailer who sets the price of a loose diamond and not a gem trade laboratory. However they will use the diamond grading report that comes with the diamond and a report called a rapaport sheet as indicators in setting the price.

The rapaport sheet is a jewelry industry diamond price guide that recommends a reasonable wholesale and retail price across a wide range of loose diamond grades.

Anyone buying diamonds should also get an independent appraisal (Independent from where they bought it and NOT just a second opinion whilst on the premises). This will serve two purposes:

1: As an insurance valuation
2: As reassurance against fraud.

Trace-ability and accountability are the two buzzwords to be aware of here. Credit card transactions can be traced and also give you another proof of purchase receipt that undeniably identifies the merchant if you need to make a complaint or return.

Get E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G in writing. If the jeweler has promised anything, make sure it’s in writing (and signed and dated) on company headed notepaper. That includes but is not limited to:-

Guarantees, return policies, receipts and make sure they authenticate in writing that the diamond you’re buying is the one that’s described on the diamond grading report you receive, that way if a switch has been made you’ve got the proof.

Once you’re done, immediately arrange to see an independent diamond appraiser who will authenticate the value and quality of the diamond you have purchased. DON’T use the in-house service for obvious reasons and again beware! Make sure they charge a flat fee and not a fee based on the percentage worth of the diamond, otherwise an over valuation might be made!

Once you have the appraisal and you’re happy with the purchase arrange insurance immediately. Sometimes you can do this through your home insurance but the best way is to set up a separate policy just for your diamond, make sure you overestimate to allow for the setting that your loved one will want to choose as soon as you’ve shown her the diamond.

If they see a weakness they’ll attack it and your weak spot is usually your love for your partner. So leave her at home, go alone and then try and narrow down their attacking options. Even so, don’t try and press home any area of superior diamond knowledge that you think that you have. Superior knowledge and advantage comes with experience, which you automatically won’t have.

Keep your focus, you’re going to be an expert on choosing the right diamond for you. You’re never going to be an expert on the properties and characteristics of fine diamonds without a lot of training and experience.

Let the diamond jewelers know that you’re deadly serious by taking an instantly recognizable book with you. We recommend expert diamond appraiser Fred Cuellar’s book
“How To Buy A Diamond”. Even if you decide never to read it (we recommend you do – it’s very “eye opening”) the jeweler will never know. They’ll just realize straight away that you’ve done your homework and you’re not to be messed with.

Don’t be intimidated, if you know your basics then use your knowledge to ask questions about the kind of equipment the jeweler has to offer you in helping you decide on which diamond to buy. No equipment – no sale, walk away.

Minefield Or Bargain?

Clarity enhanced diamonds have been around for some time but what are they and how do they relate to other diamonds?

The biggest problem is distinguishing between the different types of diamond enhancement and then there’s the problem of judging the quality of the enhancement.

When looking into the issues surrounding clarity enhanced stones we found there were four main types. Although to be fair it could be said that some of the treatments are more of a color enhancement than a clarity enhancement and this is where a lot of the confusion stems.

It could also be argued that improving (removing) color in near colorless stones can enhance transparency and improve clarity  and therefore it might be legitimate to view certain clarity enhanced diamonds as “treated” diamonds also.

Fracture Filled Diamonds

If there are any clarity enhanced diamonds to avoid then these are the ones. G.I.A (Gemological Institute Of America) do not accept fracture filled stones for diamond grading.

A fracture filled clarity enhanced diamond is a diamond that has had a crack, fissure or chip filled with a clear substance that has similar optical properties to diamond thereby enhancing the clarity of the stone. The substances used in this treatment can vary widely from glass to resin.

If it’s applied to the surface of the diamond then it’s NOT considered a permanent treatment. If it’s applied to the interior of a diamond then it’s considered to be more of a permanent treatment  but it can add weight to the stone giving it an enhanced carat weight!

In a recent investigation G.I.A. uncovered a ring of fraudsters supplying clarity enhanced diamonds with fake G.I.A diamond grading reports.

Since as mentioned previously G.I.A. won’t grade fracture filled diamonds so the only way to supply a GIA diamond grading report with such stones is to forge them!

Other “less strict” grading labs issue certificates for facture filled clarity enhanced diamonds so be aware of what you might be getting yourself into.

Advice? Stay well away from any diamonds that have been filled in any way, the prices are much cheaper but if they’re not as durable as quality diamonds you’ll be paying more in the long run.

As an example we searched the Internet and found two sites offering clarity enhanced diamonds in less than 10 seconds. On checking available certification, one site offered certificates from a lab we’ve never heard of and the other site mentioned a lot about GIA diamonds but only had certificates from E.G.L and G.G.L.

You can make your own mind up, but you’ll always get what you pay for – period!

Heat And Pressure Treated Diamonds

This is a relatively new diamond enhancement process whereby a diamond is heated under pressure to remove color, thus even less desirable, relatively dark brown (cognac / coffee) colored stones that are treated in this way can end up as near colorless using this process.

This diamond treatment process is considered to be permanent and acceptable provided it is documented on the diamond grading report that accompanies the diamond and that it’s fully disclosed by a jeweler at the point of sale.

G.I.A. is happy to grade these kind of clarity enhanced diamonds and they even go as far as to laser inscribe the diamond to identify that the particular diamond has been treated in this way.

Advice? Because these type of stones are much less valuable in their natural state they shouldn’t command premium prices on the open market. If you’re considering a clarity enhanced diamond then this is your best option since this is where you’ll get the best deal over a natural colorless diamond.

Irradiated Diamonds

Whilst not strictly speaking clarity enhanced diamonds, irradiated diamonds are usually near colorless diamonds that after being exposed to strong radiation exhibit an intense color change such as blue or pink or green etc…

Because of the absolute rarity of natural intense colored diamonds called “fancy” colors and the prohibitive prices that these gemstones command, irradiation is a laboratory process used to produce similar effects for a much cheaper price.

The intended diamond is first exposed to strong radioactive treatment that quickly becomes inert after the treatment. Then the diamond is subjected to intense heat that affects the overall coloration.

If re-exposed to intense heat the color can change, so the treatment is not wholly permanent in the sense of color change, but is permanent in that the diamond will never lose it’s overall coloration and become near colorless again.

The overall clarity and or imperfections of the diamond don’t change with the irradiation process and under most circumstances nor does the structure or properties of the diamond.

Because of the permanent nature of this process G.I.A. is quite happy to grade irradiated diamonds and will laser inscribe the diamond to notify that the diamond has indeed been irradiated.

Advice? If you like colored diamonds but can’t afford the price then irradiated certified diamonds are a good option to choose.

The one thing to be aware of is that the color will change when intense heat is applied to the stone, like say in a jewelry workshop during any repair processes that might be undertaken in the future life of the diamond.

Laser Drilled Diamonds

Laser drilling most definitely produces clarity enhanced diamonds. Laser drilling is used for various reasons but the most common are for removing dark inclusions and or fracture filling.

Sometimes diamonds are laser drilled for mounting purposes, although this is not considered a clarity enhancement it should be reported and included on a diamond grading report.

The process involves burning a clean hairs width hole (virtually un-noticeable) into the surface of a diamond usually just a few millimeters deep. When it’s legitimately carried out for the removal of dark inclusions, acid is forced down the created tube to either bleach the inclusion or remove it altogether.

This is a permanent way of producing clarity enhanced diamonds, provided that no filler material is applied in the process.

When it’s done for the purposes of fracture filling, a hole is burned down into the crack and a glass like substance, with similar optical properties to diamond, is used to coat the interior surfaces of the crack to improve the clarity characteristics.

As previously mentioned fracture filled clarity enhanced diamonds will not be graded by G.I.A.

A diamond that has been drilled for inclusion removal or mounting purposes is considered as a permanent and stable enhancement. G.I.A. will grade these types of laser drilled diamonds no problem always as long as there has been no filler material applied.

Advice? There’s no reason why laser drilled, clarity enhanced diamonds shouldn’t be an option for the budget conscious diamond buyer, but as with pressure treated diamonds, beware and make sure you’re getting a good deal by comparing prices with higher quality diamonds found in all good diamond stores.

The most popular choice is the solitaire and by default it’s also the most affordable and available of all the setting styles. Unless you’ve already chosen your gemstone or diamond then that’s where you should start.

It’s always best to choose the shape and size of the gemstone before choosing the setting because most people choose diamonds which can cost between 10 or 20 times what the setting will, and unless you know your shape and size you won’t know which style to buy.

What Are The Precious Metals Options?

Platinum engagement ring settings are the best choice for the modern engagement ring simply because they’re so hard wearing and will better protect any set gemstones from harm. Not only that but they are very beautiful and extremely hypoallergenic to boot.

Gold engagement ring settings are more affordable of course and if you’re considering gold with fine diamonds then make sure that it has a platinum head in which to hold the center stone more securely. Always remember that 22K and 18k gold are the finer metals but 14k gold is undoubtedly the toughest and the best grade to choose for rings.

Titanium is a modern choice and although it’s not a precious metal in the true sense of the word it’s light, very hard and it’s very hypoallergenic. Finding traditional solitaire settings made in titanium is very difficult and when you do find them they are very expensive, even more so than platinum.

Another factor to consider with engagement ring settings is the wearer. If a ring is to be worn all day everyday then it would be more prudent to opt for a six prong setting rather than a four prong. From time to time a ring can experience some very hard knocks and the center stone will usually take the worst of it.

This could mean that the stone may get chipped or in the very worst case scenario the stone could come free and be lost, therefore a six prong head will give extra security and peace of mind. That said, a four prong setting will allow better penetration of light and the diamond will sparkle a little more brightly.

What Are The Component Parts Of Engagement Ring Settings?

An engagement ring setting comprises two parts a) The band that encircles the finger which is called the shank. b) The head, or in the case of three stone rings – heads, which holds the gemstone/s in place. The head can be a prong set up or bezel setting in which a band/collar of metal encompasses the stone around its girdle.

The shank can also contain hollows, grooves and channels in which other smaller gemstone accents can be set into the ring. This can give different effects such as sidestone settings, diamond / gemstone clusters, pavé (pavement of gemstones) and channel settings in which stones can run the entire length of the band in hollow channels cut along the circumference of the shank.

An engagement ring setting that doesn’t have center stones that are already set into the head/s are called semi mount rings and are available at all good jewelry stores.

Which Setting Should I Choose?

The answer to that question is almost like asking “which car should I choose”? The most obvious answer is the best one you can at the price you can afford, but there’s a little more to it than that.

If you can afford it then go for platinum engagement ring settings right off the bat. A classic four prong solitaire semi mount ring comes in at $300.00 and up depending on the thickness and width of the shank.

The more intricate the band and the more gemstones that semi mount rings have, the more expensive they will get and if you have a petite future fiancée, a large heavily encrusted engagement ring setting may appear more than a little out of place on her delicate love finger.

Ultimately it’s the size and shape of the center stone that dictates the style of popular engagement ring settings especially with heart, marquise and emerald shaped gemstones and this is closely followed by budget of course.

I spent probably 3 weeks going to stores around the DFW area. I found a couple of “wholesale” shops, but their selection was poor and their prices were expensive. I was looking for a 1.00 carat platinum solitare. The cheapest I found it for around here was $4200.
