In the end, a diamond is a very personal item
Please understand that diamond color is a function of rarity not quality. In other words, a D-color diamond is considered to have no visible color at all. This is the most rare of the colorless diamonds and therefore represents the top level of the scale. M-color diamonds, which show visible yellow or brown tints, are much more common and therefore further down the scale.

Buyer Tip: Be aware that, in diamonds that are already mounted in settings (such as rings, pendants, bracelets, etc.), the metal of the setting can make the diamonds within them appear to have more or less color. Jewelers will often mount diamonds with more color (thus less rare) in yellow metal settings such as gold to make the diamonds appear more colorless and thus charge higher prices. When possible, check the color grade on the diamond certificate to ensure you are getting what you want.
Another thing to realize is that assessing color is something only the experts can truly appreciate. Yes, color is a function of rarity … therefore, if it means something for you emotionally to have the most rare diamond, then by all means buy a D-color diamond. However, to the untrained eye, an F-color diamond placed next to a G-color diamond will look the same in terms of color. So why pay more? Again, the scale is not a reflection of quality. In other words, D-colors are not inherently better than G-colors, they are simply more rare.
When it comes to color, diamonds are priced according to rarity (i.e., D-F diamonds are more expensive than G-H, which are more expensive than I-J, etc.). For instance, with all other factors being equal a Round Brilliant, D-color, SI1 clarity, 1.0 carat diamond goes for $7,300, yet the same diamond with G-color goes for. This is a difference of $1,200 for something that is completely indistinguishable to the naked eye.
Diamonds are Personal
In the end, a diamond is a very personal item. Most diamonds are purchased for emotional reasons and those emotions drive the purchase. To that end, I always say buy the diamond that catches your eye and makes you feel good whether it is a D, a G, or a K. In any of these cases, the diamond is still forever.
